BCI-224 (sabcomeline)

BrainCells is outlicensing this clinical-stage muscarinic partial agonist.

Highly Neurogenic Compound with Potential in Psychiatric and Neurologic Disorders

BCI-224 has been studied in more than 3,000 patients in six Phase 3 studies in Alzheimer’s disease and two Phase 2 studies in schizophrenia. It was shown to be safe and well tolerated BCI-224 is a non-selective muscarinic partial agonist.

In BrainCells’ hands, both in in vitro assays and in animal behavioral models, BCI-224 was neurogenic and demonstrated that it could be a novel approach to treat depression as well as cognitive disorders. When BCI-224 was combined with an on-market SSRI in animal behavioral models, it showed activity, suggesting that there is a synergistic response.

BrainCells acquired the rights to BCI-224 from Proximagen Group plc. in July 2010. The combination of muscarinic agents with SSRIs is covered in a patent issued to BrainCells in March 2010 (U.S. Patent No 7,678,363).
