Mr. Schoeneck joined BCI in September 2005 from ActivX BioSciences, a proteomics-based drug development company, where he served as CEO and led the strategic sale of the company to Kyorin Pharmaceuticals of Japan in December 2004. Prior to ActivX, Mr. Schoeneck was at Prometheus Laboratories Inc. where he served as President and CEO for over three years, having previously served as President and COO. While at Prometheus, he led their business strategy and operations during a period of exceptional growth and transformation. Under his leadership, Prometheus was recognized as #3 on the Inc. 500 list of the fastest growing private companies in America and as the San Diego Venture Group success story of the year (2002). Prior to joining Prometheus, Mr. Schoeneck was Vice President and General Manager, Immunology Business Unit of Centocor, Inc., a division of Johnson & Johnson. His responsibilities included leading the development and launch of Remicade® on a worldwide basis, including the formation of a strategic partnership with Schering-Plough Corporation. Before that assignment, Mr. Schoeneck served as Centocor's Vice President of Marketing and Commercial Development. Prior to Centocor, he spent 13 years at Rhone-Poulenc Rorer, Inc. (now Aventis) serving in various positions of increasing responsibility. Top

Portrait of Carrolee Barlow

Carrolee Barlow, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Barlow joined BCI in August 2004. Prior to joining BCI, Dr. Barlow was the Director of Molecular Neuroscience and the Therapeutic Area Head for Stroke and Neurodegeneration at Merck Research Laboratories. At Merck, Dr. Barlow directed the neuroscience biology and screening efforts at the San Diego site and served as the therapeutic area head for the global exploratory, licensing and full-phase efforts in the area of stroke and neurodegeneration. Dr. Barlow joined Merck in 2002. Prior to joining Merck, she held a faculty position in the Laboratory of Genetics at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California, where she maintained an adjunct appointment. At the Salk Institute, her research laboratory focused on developing and studying animal models of human neurological disease. Dr. Barlow completed her M.D. training at the University of Utah followed by a residency at The New York Hospital, Cornell Medical Center in Internal Medicine. After completing her residency training, she obtained a Ph.D. in molecular and developmental biology at the Karolinska Medical Nobel Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. After completion of her Ph.D. research, she returned to the United States and joined the National Institutes of Health where she completed medical subspecialty training in the field of endocrinology and a post-doctoral fellowship in neurogenetics at the National Human Genome Research Institute. Dr. Philip Jochelson joined BrainCells in March 2009 and serves as Chief Medical Officer at BCI where he works with the scientific team to translate the BCI neurogenesis platform into clinical drug development programs. Prior to joining BCI, Dr. Jochelson was most recentlySenior Vice President of Development and Chief Medical Officer at Somaxon, a neurology and psychiatry-focused specialty pharmaceutical company, where he was responsible for the development of all product candidates while also supporting financing and business development activities. Prior to that, he was at Neurocrine Biosciences where he led several clinical development programs. Through his combined experience, he has designed and implemented multiple clinical studies across all phases of development, and has progressed three compounds from Phase 1 to NDA submission. Dr. Jochelson previously held positions in clinical development at BoehringerIngelheim and Alliance Pharmaceutical Corp. He graduated from Medical School in South Africa and is a licensed physician in California. Top

Mr. Levin joined BCI in March 2009 from Jazz Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a neurology and psychiatry focused specialty pharmaceutical company which he joined in 2003. He brings more than 15 years of experience in the life sciences industry to BCI. During his time at Jazz Pharmaceuticals, Mr. Levin served in positions of increasing responsibility most recently as its Vice President, Corporate Development where he was responsible for licensing, acquisitions, corporate strategy and strategic alliances. Prior to joining Jazz Pharmaceuticals, he served as Director, Business Development at ALZA Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson. In this role, Mr. Levin participated in ALZA’s drug delivery technology in-licensing and out-licensing efforts. Previous to ALZA, he was responsible for business development at an early stage medical diagnostics company in Austin, Texas following four years in The Woodlands, Texas as a gene expression scientist at GeneMedicine, Inc. (now Valentis, Inc.) Mr. Levin has been a member of the Licensing Executive Society since 2000 and serves as an advisor to several early stage biopharmaceutical companies. He received an M.B.A. from the University of Texas, McCombs Graduate School of Business, and a Bachelor’s degree from the University of California, San Diego. Top

Alana B. McNulty
Vice President, Finance

Ms. McNulty has worked with BCI since early 2004. She has spent over twenty years working with biotechnology companies in various finance, business development and operating capacities, most recently as an independent consultant. From 1998 to 2002 Ms. McNulty was the Chief Financial Officer and Vice President of Finance of Elitra Pharmaceuticals. From 1996 to 1998, she served as the General Manager of the cartilage joint venture between Advanced Tissue Sciences and Smith & Nephew. From 1991 to 1996, she held various management positions at Advanced Tissue Sciences, including Executive Director of Corporate Development. From 1986 to 1989, she served as an associate at Bear Stearns Companies, Inc. and Sutro & Co., specializing in biotechnology investments. Ms. McNulty holds a Masters of Business Administration from the Anderson School of Management at the University of California, Los Angeles and a bachelors degree in Biological Sciences from the University of California, Santa Barbara. V. Ray Nathan, Ph.D.
Vice President, Product Development & Manufacturing

Dr. Nathan joined BCI in July 2007 and is currently Vice President, Product Development and Manufacturing. Previously, he was the Vice President and Head of Pharmaceutical Manufacturing and Development with Prometheus Laboratories. Prior to that he was the Executive Director, Manufacturing and Process Development of Nextran, an affiliate of Baxter Healthcare, where he was responsible for the development and manufacture of therapeutic oligosaccharide for xenotransplantation. Prior to that he was the Executive Director of Cytel Corporation and was responsible for the startup of a new manufacturing facility for the production of oligosaccharides for therapeutic and consumer applications. Dr. Nathan has also held various process development and manufacturing positions at the Monsanto Company and Hoffmann-LaRoche, where he was involved in manufacturing facility startup and new product launches. Dr. Nathan has a BS in Chemical Engineering from University of Madras, an MS in Chemical Engineering from Clarkson University, a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from West Virginia University and an MBA from Washington University in St. Louis.
