James A. Schoeneck
Chief Executive Officer
Mr. Schoeneck joined BCI in September 2005 from ActivX BioSciences, a proteomics-based drug development company, where he served as CEO and led the strategic sale of the company to Kyorin Pharmaceuticals of Japan in December 2004. Prior to ActivX, Mr. Schoeneck was at Prometheus Laboratories Inc. where he served as President and CEO for over three years, having previously served as President and COO. While at Prometheus, he led their business strategy and operations during a period of exceptional growth and transformation. Under his leadership, Prometheus was recognized as #3 on the Inc. 500 list of the fastest growing private companies in America and as the San Diego Venture Group success story of the year (2002). Prior to joining Prometheus, Mr. Schoeneck was Vice President and General Manager, Immunology Business Unit of Centocor, Inc., a division of Johnson & Johnson. His responsibilities included leading the development and launch of Remicade® on a worldwide basis, including the formation of a strategic partnership with Schering-Plough Corporation. Before that assignment, Mr. Schoeneck served as Centocor's Vice President of Marketing and Commercial Development. Prior to Centocor, he spent 13 years at Rhone-Poulenc Rorer, Inc. Carrolee Barlow, M.D., Ph.D.
Chief Scientific Officer
Dr. Barlow joined BCI in August 2004. Prior to joining BCI, Dr. Barlow was the Director of Molecular Neuroscience and the Therapeutic Area Head for Stroke and Neurodegeneration at Merck Research Laboratories. At Merck, Dr. Barlow directed the neuroscience biology and screening efforts at the San Diego site and served as the therapeutic area head for the global exploratory, licensing and full-phase efforts in the area of stroke and neurodegeneration. Dr. Barlow joined Merck in 2002. Prior to joining Merck, she held a faculty position in the Laboratory of Genetics at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California, where she maintained an adjunct appointment. At the Salk Institute, her research laboratory focused on developing and studying animal models of human neurological disease. Dr. Barlow completed her M.D. training at the University of Utah followed by a residency at The New York Hospital, Cornell Medical Center in Internal Medicine. After completing her residency training, she obtained a Ph.D. in molecular and developmental biology at the Karolinska Medical Nobel Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. After completion of her Ph.D. research, she returned to the United States and joined the National Institutes of Health where she completed medical subspecialty training in the field of endocrinology and a post-doctoral fellowship in neurogenetics at the National Human Genome Research Institute. Steven D. Targum, M.D.
Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Steven Targum serves as Chief Medical Officer at BCI where he works with the scientific team to translate the BCI neurogenesis platform into clinical drug development strategies. Presently, Dr. Targum is a consultant in psychiatry at the Massachusetts General Hospital (Boston) and lecturer at the Harvard Medical School. Previously, Dr. Targum was Professor of Psychiatry and Vice-Chair of the Department of Mental Health Sciences at Hahnemann University School of Medicine (Philadelphia) from 1989-1995. Dr. Targum founded PharmaStar in 2001, a training and education company focused on CNS drug development, which was sold in October 2004. He also developed and operated a multi-site clinical trials program which he sold in 1996. Dr. Targum consults widely to the pharmaceutical industry regarding the design and implementation of clinical trials for new psychotropic drugs and the progression of drug development from approval to launch. He has published over 100 scientific articles in the areas of psychopharmacology, psychobiology, and clinical trials methodology, lectured extensively, and conducted over 200 clinical drug trials for numerous pharmaceutical sponsors. Seth D. Goldblum
Vice President, Business Development
Mr. Goldblum joined BCI in April, 2007. Mr. Goldblum brings over 16 years of diverse business development, strategic analysis, and operations experience from the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry. Prior to joining BCI, he was Head of Business Development at Senomyx, Inc. At Senomyx, he was responsible for evaluating, pursuing, and implementing new business development opportunities for the company. Prior to his employment at Senomyx, he was the Executive Director of Corporate Development at Vical Incorporated, a biotechnology company focused on the discovery and development of therapeutic and prophylactic vaccines utilizing plasmid DNA technology. At Vical, he was responsible for all corporate licensing activities. Prior to his employment at Vical, Mr. Goldblum worked at Eli Lilly and Company, a global pharmaceutical company, where he held a variety of roles of increasing responsibility in the areas of engineering, finance, business development and management. Mr. Goldblum earned an MBA from Indiana University, an MS in Chemical Engineering from The Ohio State University, and a BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of California at San Diego. Alana B. McNulty
Vice President, Finance
Ms. McNulty has worked with BCI since early 2004. She has spent over twenty years working with biotechnology companies in various finance, business development and operating capacities, most recently as an independent consultant. From 1998 to 2002 Ms. McNulty was the Chief Financial Officer and Vice President of Finance of Elitra Pharmaceuticals. From 1996 to 1998, she served as the General Manager of the cartilage joint venture between Advanced Tissue Sciences and Smith & Nephew. From 1991 to 1996, she held various management positions at Advanced Tissue Sciences, including Executive Director of Corporate Development. From 1986 to 1989, she served as an associate at Bear Stearns Companies, Inc. and Sutro & Co., specializing in biotechnology investments. Ms. McNulty holds a Masters of Business Administration from the Anderson School of Management at the University of California, Los Angeles and a bachelors degree in Biological Sciences from the University of California, Santa Barbara. V. Ray Nathan, Ph.D.
Vice President, Product Development & Manufacturing
Dr. Nathan joined BCI in July 2007 and is currently Vice President, Product Development and Manufacturing. Previously, he was the Vice President and Head of Pharmaceutical Manufacturing and Development with Prometheus Laboratories. Prior to that he was the Executive Director, Manufacturing and Process Development of Nextran, an affiliate of Baxter Healthcare, where he was responsible for the development and manufacture of therapeutic oligosaccharide for xenotransplantation. Prior to that he was the Executive Director of Cytel Corporation and was responsible for the startup of a new manufacturing facility for the production of oligosaccharides for therapeutic and consumer applications. Dr. Nathan has also held various process development and manufacturing positions at the Monsanto Company and Hoffmann-LaRoche, where he was involved in manufacturing facility startup and new product launches. Dr. Nathan has a BS in Chemical Engineering from University of Madras, an MS in Chemical Engineering from Clarkson University, a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from West Virginia University and an MBA from Washington University in St. Louis.
