Carl Goldfischer, M.D.

Carl Goldfischer, MD, is an Investment Partner and Managing Director of Bay City Capital, serving as a member of the board of directors and executive committee, and has been with the firm since December 2000. His background includes extensive public and private investment and transaction work, as well as clinical trial development knowledge. Prior to joining Bay City Capital, Dr. Goldfischer was, until mid-2000, Chief Financial Officer of ImClone Systems where he oversaw financial operations and strategic planning. Previously, he was a Research Analyst with the Reliance Insurance Company, helping to establish its portfolio and presence in the health care investment community. Dr. Goldfischer is a member of the board of directors for BrainCells, EnteroMedics, MAP Pharmaceuticals, Metabolex, Nevro Corporation, Poniard Pharmaceuticals, and PTC Therapeutics. Dr. Goldfischer received an MD with honors in Scientific Research from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and a BA from Sarah Lawrence College.
Fred Gage, Ph.D.
Professor, Salk Institute
Dr. Gage is a co-founder of BrainCells. His work concentrates on the adult central nervous system and unexpected plasticity and adaptability to environmental stimulation that remains throughout the life of all mammals. In addition, his studies focus on the cellular, molecular, as well as environmental influences that regulate neurogenesis in the adult mammalian brain. He has won numerous prizes and awards for his work including the IPSEN Prize for Neuroplasticity, the Charles A. Dana Award, Metropolitan Life Research Award and the Keio Medical Science Prize. He serves on many health related boards, and was President of the Society for Neuroscience and is President-Elect of the International Society for Stem Cell Research. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a Member of the National Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Medicine, and a Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Charles Newhall III
General Partner/Co-Founder, New Enterprise Associates
Charles W. Newhall III co-founded New Enterprise Associates (NEA). Founded in 1978, Baltimore-based NEA is one of the largest Venture Capital firms in the United States. To date Chuck has served as a director of over 40 venture backed companies. Many have gone public and have been acquired. Several of these companies achieved market capitalizations in excess of $1 billion. He also started several companies such as Caremark, PatientKeeper, TargetRx, and LifeMetrix. Some of his current board memberships include Vitae Pharmaceuticals, Supernus Pharmaceuticals, Pharmos, Bravo Health, TargetRx, and Sensors for Medicine and Science. In 1986 he founded the Mid-Atlantic Venture Capital Association (MAVA), which now has over 80 venture capital firms that are members, and is one of the most active regional venture associations in the country. He is Chairman Emeritus of MAVA. Before NEA, Chuck was a Vice President of T. Rowe Price. He served in Vietnam commanding an independent platoon including an initial reconnaissance of Hamburger Hill. His decorations include the Silver Star and Bronze Star V (1st OLC.) He received an MBA from Harvard Business School, and an Honors Degree in English from the University of Pennsylvania.
Arthur M. Pappas
Managing Partner/Founder, Pappas Ventures
Mr. Pappas has over 30 years of operating experience as a pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry executive and venture capital investor in life science companies. He has assembled a team of investment, biotechnology and medical experts who manage over $350 million and oversee investments in more than 40 portfolio companies. Prior to founding Pappas Ventures in 1994, Art held senior level leadership positions at several multinational pharmaceutical companies, including being the CEO of international operations. In addition to leading operations, he was responsible for the development, licensing and launch of a number of key global products. He was an executive member of the board of directors of Glaxo Holdings plc, for which he was the chief executive responsible for international operations including research, development and manufacturing. Art previously was Vice President of Commercial Operations for Abbott International Ltd., and he held various executive and general management positions with Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals and the Dow Chemical Company, in the United States and internationally. Among the companies for which he currently serves as a director are: Afferent Pharmaceuticals, CardioDx, CeNeRx BioPharma and TyRx Pharma. He was the founding CEO and is currently the chairman of CoLucid Pharmaceuticals. Art is chairman of the North Carolina Biotechnology Center’s Board of Directors and is a member of the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA) Medical Industry Group Advisory Board. He previously served on the boards of Embrex (Nasdaq: EMBX), which was acquired by Pfizer, and Quintiles Transnational. Art is a decorated Vietnam veteran, having served as an officer in the US Army 101st Airborne Division and the Special Forces. Art received a BS in Biology from Ohio State University and an MBA in Finance from Xavier Univerisity.
David Thompson
Pharmaceutical Industry Veteran
Mr. Thompson conducted a successful 30-year career at Eli Lilly and its affiliates which culminated in a position as vice president of corporate strategy and business development. During his tenure at Eli Lilly, Thompson focused his expertise on all aspects of Lilly’s business, holding numerous positions including director of corporate new product planning and licensing, president and general manager of Eli Lilly Canada, president/CEO of IVAC Corporation and vice president of pharmaceutical product management and licensing. Currently, Thompson is a member of the board of directors at Bayhill Therapeutics, Inc. and Anthera Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Born in Lansing, Michigan; he is a graduate of Michigan State University with a BS and MBA.
